    With or without you

It's true. Life is going on right as you are sitting here reading this blog entry.

I had an existentialist reliving of this simple fact when I dialysed a patient on Saturday at a hospital I hadn't been too in more than a year. So much had changed. I didn't know anybody who was working there. I felt strangely isolated - but thankfully had a book to read.

Overall it just made me think that studying as much as I do allows life to just pass me by out there. Thankfully I've been trying to catch up! I've seen so many movies in the past 3 weeks - it's pure bliss. Friday is my last day with the general practitioner. I've come to realise that even though she spends a lot of time in her office, life isn't passing her by. She has quite an active family life, making me think that family medicine is perhaps NOT such a bad idea.

Now if only I could rob a bank to go on holiday - since I feel I really need a break from city life and all the usual things around me.

    A Phoenix Tear

I just finished watching that movie where Colin Farrell was supposed to be nude in: "At Home At The End Of The World". It was really moving.

What makes me more melancholy this morning is the fact that it's now confirmed. I missed my distinction for the year by 0.2%. Anyway - I did better than last year even though this year was ten times tougher! Still not a bad achievement, and only one more year to go.

Although after yesterday I feel once again that I actually know very little about the art of medicine - who said being a general practitioner was easy? I have the biggest respect for them, they take a mix bag of symptoms and give a diagnosis and treatment with effortless certainty. Then again, I suppose after 17 years of practise, I'd do exactly the same.

    Another Year

    Saturday was my 26th Birthday.

It was held with limited amounts of fanfare, but I had a great time!

I went for breakfast with a bunch of friends, did some light window shopping, missed the movies because a nap seemed more prudent! Had dinner with my parental units, and ended up watching "Mean Girls" - which was utterly predictable, but huge fun!

Thanks for everyone who remembered and offered special wishes! I had a piece of milktart for y'all!

    In Her Shoes

The things I get myself into...again!

Friday night was Randy's work function - a murder mystery dinner. I've only been to one other one in my lifetime (of 26 years) and enjoyed it immensely. Little did I know this one would be even more fun.

BUT before we get THERE we have to start with the circumstances surrounding the evening.

There weren't enough male characters in the story line - so what happens? Yes, I get volunteered to play a female! I've never done drag in my life (my mother would be so un-proud!) So after 3 weeks of begging girlfriends for outfits I finally gave up last weekend and went and bought my own.

I finally understand what women continuously go through. Try finding a dress that fits, not only the physical but also for the particular event! I mean really! I felt so incredibly FAT for the last week simply because I couldn't fit into a size 8. The dress I ended up buying was a large, and even then it showed way too many lumps and bumps! What do the poor girls of the larger population do?

Anyway - I took a dress, covered it with a male shirt, and dashed into the dressing room! Let us hope there weren't any cameras, cause otherwise the security guards would have laughed themselves to death. I wonder how the trained drag queens do it? I suppose they do make their own clothing - but shoes is the big problem! I mean honestly, it took me six shops to find an appropriate pair of pumps (not just in terms of colour, but also size! Poor Randy couldn't even find size 10 shoes! (Once again, what do the big girls do?)

Friday rolled round, with more borrowed jewelery and make-up as well as a Morticia Adams-esque wig and we departed for the 1920's Chicago like club.

The girls did their best, and I emerged as Vanessa Crooner. An ex "entertainer" of sorts. Well okay, a cheap hooker (much like my "hoerhuis-rooi" nail varnish).

The game commenced, the clues were given and I managed to find 3 out of the 4 weapons. Selling off 2 of them to the murderers and keeping the last one to be able to swindle as MANY of the guests out of their paper money to be able to walk away as the richest player at the end of the evening. It worked! I ended up with R2450 the closest runner up having a mere R1670! Who knew people valued their lives so much...and what a simple threatening piece of paper can accomplish!

It earned me the reward for the most conniving, nefarious and richest player.

Although it may come back to bite me in the ass, here is a picture of dear Vanessa.

    About Aids Day

World Aids Day was on Friday the 1st of December.

I read this and found it to be very interesting...

In the UK an estimated 63,500 people are infected with HIV/AIDS and 20 new infections take place per day. If only South Africa had such rosy statistics.

Here an estimated 950 people die per day from AIDS-related diseases and a further 1,400 are infected each day. This means a total of 530,000 new infections for the year (According to a report by the Actuarial Society of South Africa and the Medical Research Council).
