February 19 The Diva RetractorI have been really lax about writing my blog of late. Truthfully though I have just been too busy to get round to everything I'd like to. Today for instance I was supposed to finish early so I could come home and spend some quality time studying. Sadly I was stuck in theatre holding a diva retractor whilst 2 other doctors performed a hysterectomy on another middle aged gogo. I hated obstetrics by week 4 of our 6 week rotation last year - and as of today (week 5 of gynaecology) I can honestly say the feeling of dislike is growing ever more intense, almost hate in fact. It sucks to be the scivvy that does ALL the dirty work. Then again, I am at Bara and that in itself is enough to drive any sane person up the wall! I have decided that the 2064 bed hospital (supposedly the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere) will not feature on my list of internship choices, no matter how good the experience gained there. I'm going to a District Hospital (only 163 beds!) next - and I welcome the break, even though the thought of having to do 5 more deliveries is enough to bring back all those suppressed nightmares of being swallowed whole by the "opening lips of the womb" as our Prof states it! Will & GraceTonight saw the final episode of Will & Grace being broadcast on television. Yes, South Africa is way behind the times - in so many respects. I still remember watching "the gay" sitcom at 22:00 on a Friday night (cause the powers that be at our national broadcaster thought that this would be the best time for a show with such content - perhaps they thought it would rub off on the youth and recruit a new gay generation in our country). The simple slapstick and wise wit soon won and the show was moved to prime-time. That first season was also a time of my life when I struggled dearly with my sexuality. By the end of the second season I had come out to friends and most of all my mother. It's the strangest feeling to sit back and watch the final episode of this wonderful series with my boyfriend of 18 months, in our own home and snuggled up on the couch. I'll miss the show and as the final credits rolled I realised I too was loosing "My Best Friend". February 04 Whatever happens over the rainbow, stays thereIt has been an interesting and busy two weeks to say the least.
Varsity is back in full swing and I had to sleep over at Bara on Thursday night and again tomorrow night, to help out with our gynae call. I may as well start here and say that I never thought myself to be the kind of person who took offensive with elective termination of pregnancies. In fact, I was very pro choice. Sadly however, after seeing the simply barbaric nature of these procedures I have been shocked and disgusted to the core. Most of the inhabitants of Soweto seem to think that Misoprostol is the new contraceptive pill - especially when an 18 year old girl comes in for her 3rd TOP and then doesn't have a good reason as to why she hasn't come for free contraception or hasn't used any of the millions of free condoms that our government supply every year. Other women who come in bleeding profusely with inevitable and threatened miscarriages beg for us to do something to save their unborn foetuses, whilst the teenage generation are having abortions like it's a coming of age event.
Last week Saturday also saw some idiot drive into me. It has caused about R3000 worth of damage to my beloved car. The said driver was in his company car and to date I am yet to hear anything from them after I spoke to them last week. My insurance excess is fixed at R2500 so I might as well just pay in the extra R500 to prevent my premium from escalating.
Work has been pretty busy, but that's not a bad thing - I've made a fair amount of money which means my financial worries for another month are pretty much solved!
I must say though that we were looking at buying a house - but I don't see that happening. It's too bloody expensive! I don't know how people afford a R1 million home, R500000 car, 3 kids in private school AND all their food from Woolworths!
Dope of the week goes to Ed Jordan who's presenting the (yawn, snore) SA version of "Deal or No Deal" - and people thought Survivor SA was bad...
On a lighter note, it rarely happens that I hear a new song on the radio and I go completely ape over it. It happened this week though. No surprise that their hit single has been topping the UK chart for so many weeks! Yes, it's Mika and Grace Kelly. The WHOLE CD has me tapping along on the steering wheel. |
