    YAY!

    HOORAY!

I passed medicine, and am starting obstetrics on Monday (which is scary, cause the thought of vaginal lips opening and smiling at me for 6 weeks is anything but appealing!)

Tomorrow is Johannesburg Gay Pride - so I hope that's fun, seeing as I've taken off work!

    ILYM Randy!

Ik had twee vaders, twee egte vaders

When it comes to exam time, I hate medical school (like most other medical students). It does aggravate me though that my colleagues can become so catty and indeed, treat me without any respect as well.

Nevertheless, we always make it through. I'm not quite sure where the past 6 weeks have gone to, but tomorrow is my exam in internal medicine!

Also, it is with some hope that I present the following link for your viewing pleasure. It's a teeny-bopping dutch boy who sings about his two dads. Good on him!

    How true...

Wise advice I should have learnt whilst doing urology:

"The abdominal examination is not complete without the performance of a rectal examination. It should be performed in all patients admitted to hospital over the age of 40, unless the examiner has no fingers or acute illness such as myocardial infarction presents a temporary contraindication" - Talley, Clinical Examination 5th Edition

    Stallions!

Today whilst walking around in a very low budget shopping centr I saw Ryk Neethling (SA's answer to Ian Thorpe). Darnit I should have become a swimmer. Randy was even willing to distract him so I could fondle his abs!

I found the following quite interesting

Brad joins Charlize’s gay marriage crusade

Not only is Brad Pitt one of the hottest men in the world, but he’s further forever endeared himself to our hearts by announcing that he will only get married when gays and lesbians have the same right. Bless. The 42 year old actor told Esquire magazine that, "Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able." Some might cynically say it’s a cop-out – a way of not having to deal with the ongoing marriage question hanging over his relationship with Angelina Jolie, but we prefer to believe that he’s truly sincere in his stand. Actress Charlize Theron took the same position on her relationship with Stuart Townsend late last year, saying, “We came up with a new idea that we said we would get married the day that gays and lesbians can get married. The day that law is passed we'll get married." Double bless…

I don't feel like (changing that tyre...)

On Thursday after intake I was on my way home, when I heard a strange sounds emerging from my car...I thought enough to get out before leaving the hospital ground, and thankfully parked under a bright street lamp - cause I had a flat tyre, and was forced to change the tyre then and there!

Friday, I took it to be fixed, and found a screw the size of a small continent stuck in there!

Thankfully my dad tought me how to change a tyre before I was allowed to ever even take my first car on the open road. It's a skill that's proven to be helpful more than once!

I got my grubby little paws on the new Scissor Sisters CD as well - and, although not as enthralling as the first one there are a few tracks that make me want to jump up and down with joy! I guess there first single is a lie, because I DO feel like dancin'

    And the winner is...

After 6 months of hard work, and a near heart attack whilst presenting our research project - I finally handed it in for review by our university. Only to find out this week that we had been chosen as the third place winner for best academic research at the Prakash Vallabh annual conference. Not bad considering this is my first research project AND there were 40 other entrants, many of which have done research before!

I couldnt' believe it! There is even a prize involved, although I don't know what it is, and don't really care. I'm just happy we won something, and that all the hard work wasn't for nothing!

At this rate my article may be published before I leave medical school - which in today's EBM world is no small feat!

I also got a new phone yesterday. Much like EBM, I may need an "Idiot's guide to using your smartphone" - but we'll get there eventually! At least it's able to hold Harrison's, which is always a help.

I'm enjoying medicine, although I must say it scares me when the intern asks me, the medical student, to show her how to do an ECG. I still don't know the difference between mitral stenosis and mitral incompetence, BUT I can at least hear the murmur now, so that's another good start I guess.

Only two and a half weeks till exams though - eekk!!

    One flew over...

It is amazing what the era of antimicrobial therapy has meant for the world!

I have recovered quite well from my little tender throat episode that started on the weekend - apparently not enough though to give hammie a sleepless night because of my "erratic breathing"

I was once again reminded of how lucky I am today. I have the ability and opportunity to study and further myself, and I have someone who stands behind me no matter what.

I couldn't say the same for the 24yo male prostitute who was recently admitted to the hospital I am now working at. He's been arrested twice this year, and has been in prison twice for soliciting. He's also HIV positive and was brought to hospital with pneumonia. What makes it worse is the fact that all of this started at the tender age of 8. An alcoholic mother and abusive father led to a poor upbringing and he started to smoke (at 8!!!!!) He came out when he was 14 and was promptly thrown out of the house. He came to Jhb, met a pimp, got into drugs and the rest as they say is history.

It hasn't faulted his personality though, and the little that I have had to do with him has made a huge impact on me. He still has a fresh view on life and smiles at every given opportunity. Much like hammie, he craved a chocolate, and the fact that he is a prostitute and drug addict made us think we could easily do a rectal examination on him (it was indicated before you all start getting the wrong idea!), but he declined, as any other male would do.

In fact as any other human being would do.

It's easy to judge the world from our glass castles (in the North of Jhb), but heaven forbid we should be judged ourselves.

He's just a single drop in the proverbial HIV/AIDS bucket.

I really wish somebody would find a cure for this dreaded disease already!

    Self-diagnosis

I am tired. I had a long day, firstly I dialysed 5 patients virtually single handedly. Then I had to go to intake - where nothing much happened thankfully, cause I was a wreck.

Besides the fact that I think I'm getting a cold, I think I have a severe case of life.

Life is passing me by, or so it feels. Whilst others my age are building their careers and partying over weekends I am continually studying and / or working. It makes me feel far older and more boring than I really am - aren't I?

It's difficult to admit the truth to ourselves sometimes - especially out loud.

I have been involved in dialysis for 6 years this month. That's a long time for something so monotonous. The somewhat unrelentless pace is still ever increasing though, there is still lots to learn (of late it would seem to be the art of dialysing half-a-dozen patients all by yourself in one go!).

I guess what one of my professors said to us in first year is true: "Medical school will change you" and it has. Not for the better persei, but I am so close to finishing that it would be stupid to stop now.

Perhaps all I need is a good nights sleep to get rid of all the leeches that are sucking the last little bit of my caring attitude?

I think I finally get why some Drs lose their bedside manner.
